1. Services of the School Health department
The School Health Service is a continuation of the work of Swedish children's clinics (BVC) or in other words your child's occupational health service.
What are the goals of the School Health Service?
Our general purpose is to maintain and if possible improve children's health and work towards healthy living habits, keeping an eye on the school environment in all possible ways. We are close by and easy to reach if your child or you need our help.
The School Health service is a part of the school
We of course cooperate with all other personnel in the school, but are bound by strict professional confidentiality. You can be assured that nothing your child or you say is conveyed to anyone else without your consent. This also applies to forms you fill in or written messages.
How does the School health Service work?
The main task of the School Health Service is to work preventatively for better health and wellbeing amongst students. Through our health talks we have a chance to meet each student individually and follow their development, giving help and advice when necessary. We try to optimize each student's chances of well-being during their school years. We also offer minor health care.
Health profiles follow up of growth and weight development including BMI, eyesight, hearing, back checks and vaccinations are offered as part of our individual health talks varying at different grade levels.
At SIS Health check-ups are offered in Grade 2, 4, 6, 8 and 10.
The School Health Service is an important part of the Student Care Team.
When is the doctor here?
The school doctor is available by appointment if needed once a month.
- if the school nurse advises
- when the student or parent so desire
Vaccinations
- Grade 2; all students are offered a second shot of measles, mumps and rubella (MMR). Students born in 2001 and later.
- Grade 4; all students are offered a booster shot for tetanus, diphtheria and pertussis (DTP).
- Grade 6; all students are offered a second shot of MMR. Children born from 2000 and earlier.
Furthermore students are offered supplementary vaccinations if needed of:
- polio
- diphtheria/tetanus/pertussis
- measles/mumps/German measles
The vaccinations are optional and free of cost. Prior to every vaccination a written message is sent home with the student for parental approval. This should be signed and returned to the nurse.
To all new students!
- Please send a copy of all previous vaccinations to the school nurse before starting at SIS.
- If a student has attended a Swedish school, please let the school nurse know the name of the most recent school.
- Also if your child has attended a Swedish children clinic (BVC), please inform us of which one.
There is always the possibility that your child could become ill or get hurt at school, in which case we need to be able to reach you. It is therefore important that we always have your daytime telephone number.
We look forward to co-operating with you.

2. General medical requirements
It is essential that a SIS Student Medical Form is filled in and sent to the school before your child/ren start school at SIS or at latest on your first day at school. Please download and fill it in and send it to school to the attention of the School Nurse. This information enables our Health Department to adequately care for your child during the school day. It is also important that if any information changes that you notify the Nurse immediately.
3. Mandatory immunization requirements
Kindergarten (K) - grade 12
-For students coming to Sweden they need a Mantoux test for tuberculosis before admission and if required a BCG-vaccination afterwards; a past BCG vaccination against tuberculosis does not exempt this requirement.
-OPV/IPV (oral poliovirus/inactivated poliovirus vaccine) - a total of 4 doses of IPV or at least 5 doses of OPV and 1 IPV.
-DTP/DT (Diphtheria & Pertussis & Tetanus) - 4 doses. A booster dose is given at different ages depending on the child's year of birth.
-MMR (Measles & Mumps & Rubella) - grades K-2 need 1 dose of combined vaccine. A second dose of the combined vaccine will be given either in grade 2 or in grade 6, depending on the child's year of birth.
-HIB (Haemophilus Influenzae) - a complete series of 3 doses.
If a student has never been immunized or is behind on immunizations, our school doctor will identify an appropriate schedule for that student. This is important for us to be able to safeguard the health of everyone in the school.
