Student Counsellor

Guidance Counselling - Grades 10 - 12

Counselling Services

Personal, career, extra-curricular and post secondary guidance counselling is available for all secondary students and their families.

Academic Counselling - IB Diploma & SIS Diploma

Individual meetings to establish a three year plan are organized in Grade 10 so that the Counsellor can provide realistic academic guidance.

With teacher recommendations used as a reference point, students choose whether to study the full IB Diploma program or the SIS Diploma. Descriptions of each can be viewed under Course Offerings.

Career Planning

In Grades 10 & 11through the Advisory program and individual counselling, students begin to form a vision for their future pathway. By examining their own strengths and weaknesses, values and skills as well as interest areas, students begin setting realistic & achievable goals. Selecting professionals in their area of interest to gather further information about the career path is a task each student undertakes during the course.

Applying to College & University

During Grade 11, preliminary College/University interviews are arranged by the counsellor to gather specific information about each student’s post secondary plans.

College information evenings are held in May for parents and students to become familiar with the application process for the UK, US, Canada and Australia. (school calendar has dates).

A College pack with specific timelines is given to each student in May to begin the application process.

The Counsellor guides the student through the entire process, including their personal statements and college essays, and writes the final recommendations for the universities.

Definitions:

Conflicts

There is a marked difference between a conflict situation and either a bullying or harassment situation.  Conflicts are usually direct confrontations between two or more individuals in a specific situation.

These situations can usually be sorted out by school personnel or by the individuals themselves with no further incidents occurring after the original conflict.  It is important that staff members intervene in conflicts and come to a mutually agreed settlement so that the conflict does not grow into a larger more serious situation.

At the same time even though a conflict is situational and usually resolved immediately, acts of harassment or discrimination can occur during that conflict and it is important for the staff to be aware of all the details and appropriate action be taken in accordance with the schools guidelines.

Acts of intimidation

The dictionary definition of intimidation is “To coerce or inhibit (an individual) by or as if by threats” and applies in our school.  No individual should be allowed to inhibit or threaten another member of our school.  Intimidation can take the following forms: student to student; student to teacher; and teacher to student intimidation.

Discrimination

Discrimination is when there is unfair treatment of a person based on a negative or hostile attitude towards a group they belong to. It is not just a thought or attitude (prejudice) but can also be expressed through behavior, action or outcome.

Harassment

Harassment is defined as “To irritate or torment persistently”.  This can be physical and/or physiological.  Harassment falls directly under the title of ‘Bullying’ and will be dealt with according to the school guidelines concerning ‘Bullying’.

Bullying

Bullying at school is when one or several students repeatedly and systematically harass another student physically, psychologically or both during a specific period of time.  The time period can be a few weeks but it is often months or occasionally years.  Individual incidents of harassment are not classified as bullying.  Bullying most often takes place within a student’s class.

School guidelines concerning bullying

PROCEDURE FOR ACTION:

The student asks the perpetrator to please stop.

If it continues, the student once more asks the perpetrator to stop.

If unsuccessful, the student or peer reports the incident to a member of the Anti- Bullying Team or their teacher who then reports to a member of the AB team.

The committee member writes a detailed report outlining the incident.

The team meets to discuss the incident and agree on a plan of action.

A mediation meeting with the perpetrator and victim is arranged where the victim can safely express his/her feelings about the alleged harassment.

Parents of the perpetrator are contacted and invited to a meeting with the Principal and member(s) of the Anti- Bullying Team where suitable consequences will be discussed and enforced.

The student’s Advisor teacher will be informed of the situation.

'Friends' Program

Stockholm international school is now working with the organization Friends and there anti bullying method which involves students as friends’ representatives in each class (grade 6 to 10). Read more.
